What is Central KYC?
Central KYC (CKYC) is the government's registry of KYC records across banks, insurers and the stock market, run by CERSAI. When you complete KYC for mutual funds, the KYC registration agency (KRA) also uploads your record to CKYC, and you get a CKYC number by SMS or email. Mutual fund houses still check your KYC status with the KRA. If your KRA status is KYC Validated, other fund houses and brokers can use your record without asking you to do KYC again.
How do I become KYC compliant?
Download the Koshex app and complete KYC once; it takes a few minutes with your PAN and Aadhaar. You give your PAN, an Aadhaar OTP or DigiLocker document, a live photo and your signature, and verify your mobile number and email by OTP. No separate in-person check is needed when KYC is done this way. If you would rather not use Aadhaar, you can complete KYC with a passport, driving licence or voter ID and a video or in-person check, but that record is usually marked KYC Registered rather than KYC Validated, so a new fund house may ask for KYC again. An NRI can complete KYC in the Koshex app.
How do I update my KYC data (address, email, name etc)?
You can update your KYC details in the Koshex app. You can also file a KYC modification through any fund house, registrar or broker: CAMS and KFintech accept it online for resident individuals. The KYC registration agency updates your record and passes the change to the firms that use it. A change of name needs a copy of a document showing the new name. If your KYC status is KYC Registered, a modification using Aadhaar can turn it into KYC Validated.
When can I start investing after KYC?
You can invest as soon as your KYC is complete. The fund house or registrar uploads it to a KYC registration agency (KRA) within three working days, and the KRA checks your PAN, name and address within two days. If a check fails, new transactions are held until it is fixed. You can check your KYC status in the Koshex app, or with your PAN on a KRA's website (CVL KRA, CAMS KRA, KFin KRA or NDML). It shows as KYC Validated, KYC Registered or KYC On-Hold.
What do KYC Validated, Registered and On-Hold mean?
KYC Validated: your PAN, name, address, mobile and email are verified and your PAN is linked to Aadhaar (or exempt). You can invest with any fund house without KYC again. KYC Registered: your KYC is accepted but something could not be checked, often a non-Aadhaar document, a PAN not linked to Aadhaar, or only one of mobile and email verified. You can keep investing where you already hold units, but a new fund house will ask for KYC again unless you update it. KYC On-Hold: a check failed, such as PAN, or both mobile and email. New investments and SIP instalments stop until you fix it.
